Justine goes Theatrical and Isabel goes to The Rack

I woke up the morning before the weekend and received a call by our highly esteemed Beto, who plays such wonderful characters as the Butler in Barbazul and the mean inquisitor in Maleficarum, he asked: Have you seen the newspaper this morning? I said no. They are announcing the premiere of JUSTINE for March! He said in a panic voice, he added: And I didn’t know anything about that! What’s happening? Why am I out of the loop?!!!

I had to respond to him that I was not aware of any agreement between us and movie theatres yet. I knew that Jac had an appointment last week but he didn’t make it because he got distracted with The Passion of Isabel. Beto suggested, sternly, that I go out and get myself a copy or two of the newspaper, which I did. And there it was, with a color picture of Amy, the newspaper announcing that 7 Bolivian films will be premiering this year, one of them, Jac Avila’s JUSTINE. To my surprise, there was already a date! March 2nd! I was sure that was news to everyone, including Amy and Jac, the producers. And yes, everyone in the cast and crew started contacting everyone else about this nobody news. WTF was happening. Jac had to go to have a talk with the people who made that announcement to the newspaper, and he returned with the news that the premiere will be in March, but on the 16th, because it was very possible that Amy and Erix will be returning from the US just before that date. So, now it is official, JUSTINE is going to have a theatrical run after all.

While all that was happening, Bea and Jac were very busy getting ready for The Passion of Isabel, they spent Saturday at the set. Actually, Jac spent most of Saturday carrying a lot of big and heavy things to the set, setting things up there and then waited for Bea to arrive to test something that was very, very important for him. The Wheel/Rack. There’s a bigger illustrated story about this at the Red Feline Club.

This is the short version. The question in Jac’s mind was what kind of Rack was he going to be featuring in his new movie. He had an idea but he wasn’t sure if it would be physically possible, so he needed Bea to test his idea and to see if she was willing to be put through that… and to make sure it was safe, within perilous reason, of course. He also wanted to know if he could use The Wheel from JUSTINE as a Rack. It was designed to be used in that fashion as well, but it was never tested. In fact, when The Wheel[/center] was put upright, it had the tendency to go dangerously forward. There were other issues that were evident, so it was never tried that way. Jac thought of a way of preventing the wheel from falling forward, squashing anyone who would be on its way down or attached to it and he was ready to test it… with Bea.

There was another issue with The Wheel. Would Bea be willing to be attached to the surface while The Wheel was upright? And to be turn around knowing that she would be upside down at one point with only her ankles supporting her body? Would the structure of The Wheel hold someone in that fashion? Part of that scenario was tested. Bea climbed up the wheel to see how she felt about it. The Wheel held her well and she was fine with it. Now the question remains, is Jac going to turn the wheel around? The test will come… I think… soon.

That night, after all that testing, Jac was all beside himself with joy. Bea was willing to be put through some pretty scary and visually striking wheel tortures and The Wheel itself suddenly became a very important part of the movie, perhaps the most important. A giant step for the production. There are some questions lingering: can The Wheel be turn and turn around, when upright, safely and would Bea be willing to go at it? The other questions are more of the creative kind, what sort of tortures are going to be applied to Isabel while she’s on the wheel? There’s one movie that Jac saw a while ago and he was talking about it, last year, I think. In that movie, the story of a Saint, the main character, a woman, is nailed to a wheel. She’s fully clothed, but that scene is very effective. I think he’s considering that now.
