The First Cut of JUSTINE is two sequences away from being completed. I expect that to happen by this weekend. Yes! The first cut of JUSTINE will be done by Sunday. The Final Cut, Sound Mix and Color Correction will be happening next week. It is very possible that the film will be ready at the end of the month! Can we expect a release date now?! I think we’ll have a release date before the end of the month! JUSTINE is coming!

Reine Margot, My comments were not directed at your projects but, rather, at the audience of the forum. It was reading their opinions that I sensed the tension I mentioned in my post. In any case, even if you discount the production costs that are needed to put on film one of the major works of the Divine Marquis, just concentrating on the GIMP scenes, as some diehard Gimpers would like, would not work. Anyone who has come in contact with Sade’s ouvre knows that the erotic parts cannot be divorced from his philosophical ramblings which, in fact, can occupy more space that the GIMP scenes. This would be another problem in conveying the Marquis’s meaning, i. e., how to incorporate the long philosophical disquisitions into a medium such as film which is mostly visual. Many have stumbled over this problem before and failed dismally.

Justine The Novel has that basic De Sade story telling. Endless conversations and monologues that basically repeat themselves over and over to make a point. Within those dialogues and monologues there are some story lines and with them descriptions of events. The dialogues have descriptions, on a first person style, mostly Justine, narrating her story, and most of the descriptions, that tell of her woes can be made into individual movies and/or episodes of a series. It would be very, very long and probably boring series. If those dialogues were kept verbatim, it would be nearly impossible for an actor to memorize them all. Really. So, what most scriptwriters and directors did was to take some bits of the book, and dedicate a movie to the portion they decided to select plus the story they decided to add to it. Jac did away with most of the dialogues, condensed the parts that tell the story of Justine and decided to tell the story with images. The philosophy of the Marquis is there, as well as his humor, he was humorous, and his irreverence. But most importantly, the film captures the essence of the main character, Justine, who is willing to suffer to maintain a sense of virtue, to be virginal even after having been raped repeatedly, and to claim of her innocence when she’s actually not really innocent.
