The Via Crucis of Camille<\/mark><\/strong> continues with Crux 3- The Slave.<\/mark><\/strong> Camille emotes an innocent slave being whipped and crucified for a crime she did not commit. She resists the pain, grimacing, trying not let out a sound, to thwart the ones who want to make her scream. Another intimate study of torture and crucifixion by Camille and JJ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was sitting on these videos for a very long time. I knew they were good but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to share them or not. They belong to a time in my life that it’s well in the past and they are part of my life experience before Red Feline On The Cross.<\/mark><\/em><\/p>

It is with a lot of hesitation that I now let them out into the world. I might change my mind, I might decide that I don’t want them out, after all.<\/mark><\/em><\/p>

Or I might decide that they should be out on DVD… I’ll decide after I see the results of this experiment.<\/mark><\/em><\/p>

So.. this is the first time a clip of the Via Crucis series is seen outside of our office.<\/mark><\/em><\/p>

A bit of background.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Camille and Jac returned into the studio\/bedroom for the third time to work out another crucifixion sequence, they were in agreement that those videos were basically personal, there was no intention to ever release them. They belonged to Jac alone..<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jac told Camille the story behind the video they were about to work on, that of an innocent slave woman who is condemned to scourging and crucifixion accused of a crime she didn’t commit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Camille wanted to know what was the difference with the one they made a few days before, the story of the runaway slave that stole bread, was arrested and ended up killing a centurion. Jac had a simple answer. Many slaves were crucified in Roman times, thousands. In this new story, the slave had been freed by her master, who liked her very much, they were lovers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The master’s wife was very jealous of this slave. After her husband’s favorite was freed, the wife killed him and accused the slave of the crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The young slave was captured and condemned to a cruel and prolonged agony on the cross. “A very sad story<\/mark><\/em>” Camille commented then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this session, the set remained largely the same as before, with one notable difference: the lighting. Jac took a greater creative risk to create a more atmospheric effect. The room appeared darker, and the overall look aligned more closely with his preferred visual style. Drawing on chiaroscuro<\/strong> technique, he used bold, pronounced contrasts between light and dark to create the illusion of three dimensional volume, the method acts like an onstage spotlight, pulling focal points out of the shadows to add intense drama and realism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The large mirror against the back wall served a specific visual purpose: it revealed the reverse angle of the scene. This posed a technical challenge, since Jac wanted to preserve the illusion without appearing in the shot while holding the camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During this period of time, after the release of the TV miniseries, Jac began considering a television series based on a film script he had written when he first arrived in Bolivia. As he continued developing the story, he also started approaching TV stations to explore whether any might support the production by providing essential resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time, he already owned several important production tools: A quality camera, standard for television requirements of the time, an editing system with one recorder and two players, three monitors, an editing console, a sound-mixing system. Together, this equipment was worth about 100,000 dollars and he had already used it during the production of the miniseries and a couple of documentaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even with that foundation, he still lacked several key resources, including lighting, sound equipment, and cash for production expenses. His main hope was that a TV station would provide videotapes and some of the additional equipment needed for the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To begin the series Jac would require at least 200 tapes, each costing about 20 dollars, for a total of roughly 4,000 USD. Although this was far less than what he had spent on his documentary about Haiti\u2014shot on celluloid, with each 10-minute camera roll costing around 165 dollars plus substantial laboratory expenses\u2014it was still money he did not have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All that was in Jac’s mind as he shot the third video of the series we now title The Via Crucis of Camille<\/mark><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The session itself went well. Camille\u2019s performance was superb, and her expressions were enhanced by the atmospheric visual approach Jac had begun to develop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After many angles of the mandatory lashing of Camille’s body, when it was extremely bloodied, he lowered her to proceed with the nailing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All the steps of the crucifixion were performed with incredible intensity, the nailing of Camille’s hands, the raising of her body after she was cruelly attached to the crossbar, the setting up of the crucified Camille on the cross itself, the nailing of the feet to the small feet support and finally, the removal of any rags remaining on Camille’s body, to leave her totally naked, to agonize on the cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As this post was being prepared, Camille called Jac from France to ask how things were going, especially given the political situation in the country. They had a long and warm conversation, constantly interrupted by a bad connection, either in Camille’s or Jac’s service. I can share the first message Camille sent asking him to call her back\u2014which he did. It’s nice to hear her sweet voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
