There was a deep sadness from that moment on, one that continues and it will linger for sometime. Amy and Jac had a chance to see him when they were in the US last December. Amy was relieved to see that her father was in good hands, that the good people of the home where he was living were like family to him and that she had made the right decision.

But still, there was sadness and some guilt as well. She was aware that the day would come within a short period of time because of the nature of his illness and that day came sooner than anticipated. With the grief came a bit of relief as well. He’s finally resting.

Amy is in to the US to say her final good bye and to fulfill her role and take care of all that needs to be taken care off. She’s the only daughter and her father left her the legal power to take care of everything and she will. She’s the Heskinator and we’re sure she will accomplish all she’s set to do while carrying the grief for her loss.

Life will go on and Amy’s memories of her father will surely inspire her and move her as she marches on with her projects. She will gain strength from her experience and she will continue to use all she learned
from him.

While she carries on her mission in Maine, we’ll be doing our part here to continue with the work and the collective passion we all share. He’s editing his baby.

I know it’s intense because it took two days to shoot, four to five hours of shooting time every day. Lot’s of angles of the same scene where Amy had to go through the whipping in front of a group of people. But not only the actors and the crew were watching the scene. Part of the public were the workers, guards and execs of the Museum where the scene was filmed. A two day public whipping indeed … followed by a very intense public execution at a later day or two. This resulted in a massive amount of footage for Jac to edit down and make that scene as intense and unforgettable as it was for those who saw it live.

All that spectacular work for a mainstream, vampire movie that will open in theatres and …

A Canadian: it’s always a good idea to keep your expectations in check. But look at that pic of naked Amy at the whipping post, and imagine a naked Veronica similarly tied to the opposite side of the post, facing her.

I’m not sure such scene, Amy and Vero together at the whipping post, would’ve made it to the script. The flogging scene, what comes before and what comes after is a large part of the story, if not THE essential part of the first part of this series. Yes, it is a series of at least three movies. However, anything can happen in the future, maybe even a scene as the one described by D. Santorum.

One particular element in a vampire trilogy is that vampires can’t be killed just like that and if caught, at least in Jac’s conception of these characters, they can be made to suffer and for long periods of time. That, in essence, is the nature of the story and Jac’s mind. How to have your damsel in distress in extreme distress and still survive to see another distressful day. The question is how can Amy’s and Vero’s characters end up in the same place, a whipping post?.

Veronica will have her moment… and does have her moment in the first part of Dead But Dreaming. Hmmm…that’s a challenging statement. I think rape and strangulation are indeed erotic. Certainly there have been countless rape scenes in all kinds of movies. Suppose the Amy movie on Bluebeard was based on a true story? Bluebeard was fictional, but what if the film were based on the Boston Strangler? Would that make it less erotic, or not erotic at all? Certainly millions of women have been raped over the years in real life. Does that automatically disqualify every rape scene made on film afterward? Electricity is invisible to the eye and as such presents a real visualization issue for a medium like a film. (I am immediately dismissing the often used, obviously fake “cheap tricks”, such as flying digital sparks, or smoke coming off of the victim. NOTE – doing a spark demonstration between the poles of the device to psychologically prepare the subject for interrogation, is not the same as fake digital sparks coming from the subject’s body.) But this is an acting issue. The subject who is stretched in front of her interrogator for electro-torture, presents an entire conversation of body language with the tensing and untensing of her various muscles, the movement of her chest as her breathing rate changes, etc. as she goes through the process of being prepared, intimately wired up and finally tortured. And of course, if her body is naked, every bit of this body language is in full view of her interrogator (and the audience).

Again, I completely agree. The one modern method of torture that can be visually strong is electro torture. What makes the electro torture scene in Agent X work as it does, is the acting, the body language. The stiffening and lifting of the body, the eyes popping, the veins on the neck thickening, the fingers stretching… all of that and a lot more of the body doing its part.

Lynn I would also add, that visually, there would be no difference between how the body reacts to being touched by a hot branding iron and by an electric cattle prod. The visual difference would “only” be in the marks left behind – a 2nd/3rd degree burn by the branding iron, but two tiny red marks by the cattle prod. It also is not hard to figure out which torture could be applied longer – a lot longer!

We have the branding iron in Maleficarum and we could have one in a spy movie. It doesn’t have to be a cattle prod to be modern, it can be a knife heated over any flame or heating devise and even a lit cigarette applied to various parts of the suffering body.

Lynn Now, to switch subjects – how does it change my feelings, if watching something I (we) realize that what is being depicted really happened? My honest answer is: it doesn’t. Everything (fact or fiction) that is depicted HAS in fact happened. The only difference is whether the background being presented as the reason/cause in the specific case shown, has been scrambled by a novelist or is being described form a history book. That said, as I have written previously, I am sadistic/masochistic enough to enjoy watching torture, but I do not enjoy watching a victim/subject get killed, or her body get reduced to bloody and charred hamburger meat. Me.

There’s nothing new under the sun, so goes the saying, and in fact most fiction lifts ideas from reality and sometimes reality can actually beat fiction. One recent news item I read tells that a young woman, 15 years old, was sentenced to 100 lashes because she has sex out of marriage. The fact is that her stepfather raped her.

Fiction, however, can take a subject to extremes reality can’t hold, as in the case of those tales of Martyrs that endure tremendous torture and still survive to endure more. Fantasy dwells in such territory, the territory of the extreme, because it can. One artist that likes to show extremes is Quoom. Below a rendition of a scene from Martyr or The Death of St Eulalia, using Camille’s image and the altar piece found in Barcelona.

In Jac’s movie, the main character, Camille, wants to go through the torments of the saint. Torments described in poetry and legend. Were they real? Did that happen at any time? For Camille it was, and that’s what was important for her. The long suffering and extreme torment of the saint is what she wants for herself, but..

Lynn Finally, I have this comment to make about my feelings towards the entire issue of real vs fake and voluntary vs involuntary. As I have also indicated before, my interests/fantasies go towards “interrogations”. Interrogation by torture presents an interesting psychological dilemma. The situation, in a real situation, is involuntary in that the Agent (except in some really bizarre plot) has not voluntarily allowed herself to be captured. However, once she has been captured, the torture is “voluntary”, she has an option: choose to talk, or, choose to be tortured. And, apparently she has chosen to be tortured if that is what is happening.

To a large extent that is true. The agent in real life would probably spill her/his beans early on in the process to the point of admitting to deeds that she/he didn’t do. In fiction, however, our Agent X opts to suffer the extremes our torturer can come up with to the point of finality. Is she consenting? Of course not, but by refusing to confess, she’s asking for it.

I cannot say that there was any disagreement at all. Old methods, medieval or ancient methods, have a more potent visual power. They also have the added resources of art, having been portrayed through the ages in so many visual ways. Like Crucifixion, for instance, a favorite of Jac’s, a symbol in one of the largest religions in the world. Images that are part of culture, images that are undeniably sexy for a large number of people.

Modern methods do not strike me as visually attractive in general, although there are some exceptions, like electro torture. That’s why the need to “modernize” old methods, like the rack, the horse, etc. I recently read a book where a modern instrument was used in an old fashioned way. Barbed wire.

In Red Room barbed wire is used as a crown of thorns.

Some people, like Lynn, don’t like a lot of blood, some others do. In the realm of fantasy there’s
room for all.

In our work we go for both, depending on who’s calling the shots. If Amy has more of a say in a project, there might be less blood, if, however it is Jac who’s spawning a tale, it might be very, very bloody. Not always, but often enough.

His first film, the one that he specifically shot to reach a targeted “market” was Red Feline on the Cross and it was bloody. Very bloody.

Which brings me to something that is often discussed in our get togethers, more often than not between Amy and JJ.

We took a big step in 2011 by going into bigger productions, which means bigger expenses and longer production times. This productions are very different from what we started with in the days of Red Feline.

This new path has, in fact, stopped our past productions, totally. Even if Le Marquis is somewhat similar to our previous work, two people, one set, all torture and nothing but, … still, it is different. So, once in a while a discussion comes up, should we go back to making some smaller productions or not?

The argument in favor is that it is not too hard to make them, specially now that we have so much equipment and resources, the argument against is that the bigger productions are, in fact, doing much better and taking most of our time, if not all, and they have the potential to go a lot farther, which in fact is happening.

But Jac looks out of the window, feeling nostalgic for those old days when making the Red Feline movies was so much fun and when they were so intimate. A dark set, nobody watching, just the two people living a fantasy with a couple of cameras running, taking it all in.

Amy’s sad journey back to her homeland will take less than a month, maybe a couple of weeks, according to her. So, Olalla, her new film, will begin production sometime in April.

That means that the second part of Dead But Dreaming should start production in June.
